Usual Saturday

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon, much like all Saturday afternoons.
She took out the powder from the chest of drawers and kept it on the table, just like she had done a  hundered times before. The aparatus was set, the powder neatly rolled out on glass. It was just a matter of time before she would be transported to another universe. Where colors were bright and the air thinner, some bright light and gentle drift would take her far away from the reality of the usual Saturday afternoon.

‘Stop’ she said.
‘Please for heavens sake stop’
‘Don’t do it – you have hope now – your kid is waiting at school’
‘You have a lot to live for – don’t give up this chance’.

With a sudden burst of emotion, she pushed the table away and the powder blended into the room. She ran out of the house to get into her car.

At the first turn, an oncoming truck ended her path to hope.If only she’d let her quiet Saturday afternoon, be the usual Saturday afternoon….

Fire !

We didn't start the fire
Who lit the fire?

Hitler, Dyer or ire,
all played with fire,

Woman, Sacrifice or desire,
all burnt in fire,

Steam, coal or Gold
all tested by fire,

Ambition, passion or aggression
all expressions of fire,

Warmth, protection or ripen,
All cared  by fire,

Destruction, death or inferno
All products of fire

Reform, redesign or change
all functions of  fire

Yet, we didn’t start the fire,
Will you light the fire?

Gyanban Thoughts : a poem dedicated to change, with the backdrop of fire.

The fingers trembled as I changed my relationship status to ‘its complicated’ & stared at the screen blankly.

My blurry eyes saw little red dots appear instantly, indicating their concern for me. Soon the numbers grew & even people I didn’t know “liked” my status. The inbox flooded with messages and chat requests were popping all over the screen.

‘Have I become famous?’ I wondered.

"Where were they when I wanted to live?" I thought & pulled the trigger.

Gyanban thoughts:  this short story goes out to all those friends we once like and loved, and now ignored. How many times have they tried to reach out to you? Or if they have not, have you wondered why?

Unwrong the world !

Global warming , nuclear threat,
Who cares ,my needs should be met.
Pollution and the greenhouse effect,
What is that? Oh nothing to fret.

Sandy Storm or the fiscal cliff
Why are the Gods so miffed?
Mindless violence and sorrows deafen
Guns on arms swollen.

Dicey healthcare and dystopia
Financial crisis and hysteria.
Gang rape of life in media.
Sign of peace, an utopia.

Happy and Gay still in dismay
Black and white still fight,
Erupting fury in disarray.
Money might in poor light.

Terrorists and alarmists
Selective reading of the texts.
Water is in short supply
Yet tempers boiling nearby.

Dogged man and the human chain
Tested faith and  unforgiving pain
Pinned hopes to miracles in vain
Waited for a dawn which never came.

Where are we headed, what do we gain?
Crossroads ahead for the DNA strain.
Yet another moment goes by,
Wonder if God fell out of the sky?

Gyanban Thoughts: Where do we begin fixing things? What else will it take? What are we doing to change ourselves?
