Unlike reality, writing fiction ...has to make sense... Simple observations about life in the form of short stories, poems and thoughts. It s about life and people. It's about you and me.

Luck - by Design?

He was in no mood to listen, kept on dodging cars and bikes along the way.
‘Please slow down I am feeling scared’ she said.
‘Nothing can stop us darling, we are going all the way’ he said.
Lara Khan & Chris D’ Souza eloped that night.
They’d met by sheer accident.
Torrential rain & a deserted bungalow were the perfect catalysts.
‘You shouldn’t be alone at this hour’ Karthik Iyer whispered.
‘It’s not by design’ Ujala Jaisingh murmured.
There was instant combustion; lips devoured the different contours hungrily.
7 years & 2 miscarriages later, the water bag burst one more time…
‘The helmet strap is hurting’ Chris shouted.
‘Let me take it out for you’ Lara offered.
‘Hang in there honey, hospital is around the corner’ Karthik shouted nervously.
‘I will’ Ujala said calmly.
Karthik turned to look ahead –shocked.
Chris looked at her, one last time – wearing the helmet.
He knew the brakes had failed.

Gyanban Thoughts – we often ask why is life sometimes so cruel ? Unfortunately we rarely or never get the answers. This 55 fiction is about 4 characters, in different backgrounds meeting by chance, by accident…
Notice the first letters of each character is by design , forming the word LUCK. Hence the title Luck by design, which in itself is an oxymoron…much like life isn’t it?
Other subtleties in religious beliefs and personality traits are by design to heighten the disparity of the plot, yet the end is the ironical similarity.
And in case you missed, the cherry on the cake –
Chris’ speeding the bike was not by design, he realized the brakes had failed and was trying to dodge his way to a halt, yet being night time it was difficult.
Ujala knew her baby had gone with the burst of the water bag, but remained calm, because she could not bear to break the news to the nervous Karthik, she thought the doctor would be a better bet – and this was by design.
The bike incident inspired by some TV advert on the net I saw many years ago. This story was created at about 30,000ft. above sea level on my flight out of Bangalore. The sky outside the window highlighted yet another oxymoron – flying by design and grounded only by luck !

Fire-Freeze

At the root of life there is contradiction. Sometimes, don’t dig deep !
At the stroke of midnight her eyes opened and she realized it was all but just a dream. The same one for the last 5 years.
Earlier that day…
Nishika Roy had just spent her 35th birthday sitting at work meeting yet another deadline. Staring blankly at the screen saver. Her hair kept falling on her face every time the air conditioner vent swiveled. She had given up trying to fix both.
Somewhere in the distance a fax machine cried out loud for attention, somewhere there was a lonely clock chiming to be noticed and somewhere the ambulance siren would cross fade every now and then.
Nishika was in her own world. A small world. Very few people had access to that space. Always in control. She had spent well over 5 years in her current role and was in reaching distance to get to the Director level. Life had taught her to keep on the guard at all times, never let anyone in…
Yet the only one who forced into that little world was Aashni Iyer. A newbie in the company and she had already got everyone talking. Quite the opposite, she exuded a magnetic personality, natural charisma and poise of a queen. She was a lethal combination of beauty and brains. Deep black eyes, sparkling skin, just the right curves, and in the same breath, a Harvard degree to boot. Pedigree.
‘I’m Aashni – and it means lightening’ Nishika recalled her first words.
Aashni Iyer had joined as the new Manager for business development. The otherwise white and grey office suddenly seemed colorful. The otherwise sedate people suddenly had a fillip in their strides. The smiles were brighter and the perfumes stronger.
Over time, Nishika had gone from indifference to dislike and finally today, it had graduated to hatred.
‘Ok guys let’s meet up in the conference room for a quick meeting – there’s no big agenda, so just hop in’ - the boss announced. Everyone looked a bit puzzled. Something in Nishika’s gut was telling her it was not good news. After all an agenda-less meeting was never a good idea at work.
‘Team I’ve been wanting to say this out for long but couldn’t for some very binding reasons, but now am free to share – I am here to announce a promotion. Please join me in congratulating Aashni Iyer to Director business development’.
Suddenly Nishika felt all eyes turning towards her with various emotions – sympathy, victory, mock and even indifference. Cheers and claps filled the room while blocked tears and a lump in the throat greeted her in full flow. Her hands struggled to clap. Her facial muscles fought to bring a smile. The position she was gunning for the last 5 years had been given to Aashni.
Hurt turned into rage and she typed her resignation letter in protest. In the letter she pointed out all the reasons why she was a better fit, and what goof up’s Aashni had done in spite of her so-called “pedigree”. She had articulated every missed deadline, every missed forecast or failed campaign and tied it to Aashni’s input or work. In short all her stored hatred for Aashni poured out in that one email.
Her palms were sweaty and fingers trembling before she hit the sent button. The index finger was itching to click on send mail when suddenly a serene, calm voice echoed her name.
‘Hey Nishika – what are you waiting for ,come lets go together – boss has called for a meeting – now don’t work yourself up meeting deadlines dah’ling – you’ve been sitting here for the last 3 hours blankly staring at the screen. What’s the matter hon?’
‘You know these agenda-less meetings are always suspense filled dramas isn’t it sweety? Someday I will change this, but for now let’s go – people are waiting – send your emails later -Aashni urged.
A little later that evening…
‘Team I’ve been wanting to say this out for long but couldn’t for some very binding reasons, but now am free to share – I am here to announce a promotion.
‘We have never received such an overwhelming positive feedback about anyone’s promotion till date – I’ll be honest about that.’ Boss commented.
Please join me in congratulating Nishika Roy as the new Director for business development’.
‘Nishika – you’ve got some really strong well-wisher’s in this room – and one person in particular – Aashni Iyer – she put together a presentation of your achievements and collected anecdotal feedback from a 360 degree point of view, which I presented to senior management - need I say they were mighty impressed? Congratulations once again'.
Suddenly she felt all eyes turning towards her with various emotions – sympathy, victory, mock and even indifference. Cheers and claps filled the room while blocked tears and a lump in the throat greeted Nishika Roy in full flow. Her hands struggled to clap. Her facial muscles fought to bring a smile.
As she struggled to come to reality, she remembered the email waiting to go – and ran out of the room.
A true fire-freeze moment.

Clarity

Why don’t these roads take me home?
Why doesn’t the glass quench my thirst?
Why doesn’t the sky soar so high anymore?
Why doesn’t the water run so deep?
Why does the view look forlorn?
Why does the touch talk no more?
Why do pains hurt no more?
Why do rains seem so dry ?
Why should clouds take shape?
Why would the mountains stand tall?
Why wouldn’t tears fill up the sky?
Why shouldn’t they crumble and fall?
Why does it feel crowded walking alone?
Why do the walls stare emptily?
Why does the window show sorrow?
Why does the breeze miss the trees?
Why does the bright yellow seem so grey?
Why do the colors fade?
Why cant we design our fate?
Why don’t we walk through that gate?

Gyanban Thoughts - Sometimes in life there are so many questions that one looks for some clarity of thought to take or make a decision. However, in the process of finding clarity one lands up into many more questions. To make things more vulnerable, these questions manifest only in one point of time -not always. Therefore, it s tough to find out what to base your answers and or actions on ? Maybe you've just got to go with the flow...who knows...

Abundance

There were times when words could tell
what every raindrop felt,
There were times when words would fail
to see every cloud flail
There were times when roads saw us home,
memories and woods standing alone,
There were times when footprints faded,
crosses and signs jaded.
There were times when a touch would feel,
of the feelings untouched,
There were times when a glance would beseech,
to wipe off every tear that seeped.
There were times when passion would grip,
mock at the loss of logic,
There were times when reason overtook,
what passion begged to overlook.
There were times when abundance chimed,
perfectly timed,
There were times when emptiness reigned
a perfect hollow,imperfectly maimed.
There were times when I look back,
how time changed everything,
There are times when I stand alone,
and wonder how I changed every time...

Gyanban Thoughts - A few lines about the journey of life, where we witness so many changes, so many thoughts pass us by, definitions redefine, logic rebuts and reason fly by...without us really knowing why.We just flow and keep moving till one day time stop us,to make us think,of the times gone by..and why...

Really TV
Half awake at 2 the TV spoke ‘go save the soul next door’.
I went and came back.
Next I opened my eyes, it was a police station.
I asked them to see the evidence...
I showed them the carefully wrapped heart.
Glistening and still bubbling with soul.
I think they did not like the soiled severed digits.

Gyanban Thoughts - this is a dark psychological narrative. The story actually unfolds in between the lines rather than what is written. This is a deliberate attempt to have the reader think or visualise his/her own conclusion. If you read the story in detail you will need to sequence the lines one after the other only then the sequence of events will fall in place. That's when you get the big picture.
