Catharsis

Hunger and shelter kill people.

Finding a place in the prime Borough is like finding a diamond in a coal mine. Mum used to say, learn to adjust, and you will find what you want. After all, these little adjustments, are a part of the fucking parcel of life. Huh.

It would be exactly nine months on the first of April since I moved into the plush Toccata penthouse. It had soft caramel undertones on the walls and the Renoir’s, one on each side, caught my gaze on the first day. Instinctively, I knew, it was the house I wanted. As the landlady walked ahead of me, notes of coffee, pink pepper, cedar, and cinnamon oozed from her swaying hips, sucking me into a deep hallucinogenic state. Fuck me.

I couldn’t bungle this one up, unlike the previous eight houses. Terrible, they were. “No late-night partying or substances, pills, injections, powders, got it?” She said breaking my gaze. Yes, she had the vocabulary. I am the shy type, so I lowered my head and nodded gently but my head was still spinning with her magnetic fragrance, the kind which you know, is sure to get you into trouble. And it did. I fell in love, hook, line, and sinker or fish, plate, and chips. Whatever.

The first four months were rather wonderful as I settled into a routine and we got to know each other a little better. I would leave for work early morning and she would see me off with a lingering smile and as I returned, her fragrance reached the door before she did. We spent hours chatting on the terrace till one of us spotted Felix returning from work.

Yes, she was with Felix after all, not promiscuous but lonely nevertheless. “Meet my husband Felix,” she said glancing over her shoulder. He raised his eyebrows and gave her a questioning look. I think he didn’t like me. It was evident by his eye contact or the lack of it. So, it wasn’t clandestine in the real sense of the word, neither was it platonic, I don’t think anyone knows how to define love. But I was happy like I hadn’t been in my previous lives, and I wondered if she’d be my Queen?

Soon Felix began to notice our chemistry and one day he refused to eat with me on the table. I took the food to my room and she followed me inside. “I’m sorry, I think my husband is a bit disturbed, please don’t mind. He has to deal with too many things of late, the business, the extended family and the cat.” Business and family, I could understand, they are complicated, but a cat? How can a cat be a source of unhappiness? I mean what could a poor little cat do? Can a cat be complicated? Hell no. The more I thought about it, the more it became clear, she was lying. While my mind couldn’t trust her anymore, my heart had other ideas.

That day, I scurried early from work to surprise her with a gift, but the familiar soft coffee smell was missing at the door. It was a shade of smoky dark tobacco and a bit rancid burnt chocolate. “She’s out,” he said noticing my surprised eyebrows. I nodded and careened into my room before another word was exchanged. They were in it together. Isn’t it? Fuck. I should’ve listened to mum and stayed away from the heart. But I was hungry, so I waited for her to return.

She knew my food quirks just like mum. Right from my childhood, I was always allergic to Chocolate and Alcohol, a long-standing nemesis and so I kept away from the people who had them. Soon there was a knock, I waited, then it turned into a thud. Quaking, I peeped out and found Felix with a plate in hand. “Eat this, she’s kept it for you,” he said thrusting the plate. I put out a polite smile and thought he’d go, but he didn’t. “Go on eat it, I’m waiting,” he said squinting into my eyes. My heart never lied to me and it wasn’t going to be the first time today, it was screaming, get out! I drank some water to calm it down but as I opened the food cover, my heart almost leaped out of my mouth. It had Chocolate Rum balls.

He was going to kill me. Fuck him. Felix respired at the door but I felt it much closer. His gaze locked on me, I was cornered and when you corner a tiger, what does it do? It fucking fights back. Right. I flung the plate on his face. The edge hit his left eye as his knees buckled in pain. I took the fork and packed it in his neck. He growled in rage, so loud, my eardrum blacked out and eyes silenced, or is it the other way around? Fuck. I flew on his back and slammed his head on the doorknob. He passed out. I waited a few seconds before checking his breath.

He was still breathing as I got up on the chest of drawers. My mum used to say when in doubt, stub it out. Huh. The chest of drawers smashed his head. Oh, God. A big mess. I began cleaning the spill each tile at a time. The pink gooey stuff mixed with red and gave it a dark boysenberry sweet-tart like flavor. Uh-hmm. But tarts are not my favorite, so I moved on to the others. It took more than two hours to tuck him into bed.

No pun. I heard the key click inside the lock, she always got it right in the first shot, so I scampered out of the room to greet her. My excitement was short-lived as I saw her striding in with the cat. “Meet Isabell Catz, our newest family member,” she said stroking her thick Mocha mane. Slightly on the heavier side, but she’d kept herself well, the curves had not yet become folds if you know what I mean. I forced a welcome smile and returned to my room. “Felix. Where is Felix?” I heard her walking into the bedroom behind me. The floor was still sticky and a bit tart-smelly. I closed the door on her face. It broke my heart but I had to do it. I heard a loud grunt and her voice receded as she searched for the missing Felix. Huh. What about me? What if I got lost someday? Would she search for me as much? Will she cry? Huh.

I reached for the lavender room freshener and sprayed it on the bed, the floor and near the door. There was a sniffing sneeze which escaped through the bottom of the door. That stupid cat was spying on me. Moments like these bring out the cunning best in me, or is it the worst? Whatever. I cleaned up, put on a fresh coat and applied some minimal touch to my hair, I like it to be left carefully careless before I step out in public. Isabell had a ‘I-don't-like-what-I-see’ look in her eyes but I smiled, this time quite warmly. The sun pierced through the window on to the dining table. “There you are, why were you sulking? I’m going to make some phone calls – Felix is missing. Oh, and do me a favor, feed her, will you please?” I nodded with a hint of a smile.

I went inside and brought her a bowl of boysenberry milk mixed with some light chocolate. She sniffed it suspiciously but it looked so yummy. The greedy stupid cat drank it all. I didn’t have to wait long for the reaction. Isabell rolled over, scratched her back against the carpet, dug her claws into the flesh and bled on the floor. The porcelain Pygmalion was in splinters, the slender bar cabinet rattled with cracking wine glasses and the stain glass floor lamp hit the Renoir, fleecing it off its pricelessness.

I think it was an allergic reaction. Huh. I heard her scream from the upper deck, “Oh my God, no,” before she stumbled down the stairs. Those strawberry lips thud into the protruding pillar at the end of the stairway and blood smattered all over her face, she slumped on the floor, lifeless. I had my heart in the mouth or is it mouth in the heart? Whatever. I noticed her lying in a pool of blood flickering her legs in pain, quite dark I thought. She opened her bleary eyes when the cat, all seven pounds of squirming flesh, climbed onto her belly. Squinting into the sunlight streaming in from the open window, she discovered that she was now the weary possessor of a pounding headache, and at some point, had managed to lose both a tooth and a spouse. It's in moments like these you see light from darkness and I think it happened for Isabell

It was the first time she asked for permission. I nodded. Isabell took the other Renoir and slammed it into her face. Sharp girl. Huh. I opened the refrigerator to get some juice and realized, we hadn’t done groceries in a while. So, in the next few hours, we made sure the refrigerator was well stocked. Isabell understood my shy nature and I must add we are great friends now, more like a tag team partnership. Maybe someday, we’ll have a company of our own. Morning never shows the day. Huh.

It’s almost a year since the bloody Friday weekend afternoon got screwed, the stately couple was killed and to the police, I’ve promised to cooperate fully, as long as it takes. As I celebrate my birthday this thirteenth day of April, I am a happy cat. Toccata will officially be mine, well it’s technically sealed, but who cares. Fuck. Though I will need to do some remodeling, perhaps change the bed, the stains are stubborn, the refrigerator, it keeps dripping and some paint job.

But its ok. You make do with what you have left, don’t you? It’s a dream come true. Mum always said hunger and shelter kill people, not cats. So, who kills the cats? I guess it’s impossible, because every life, has nine cats. Huh.

Gyanban Thoughts: wrote this for a quirky writing competition. Did not get shortlisted. But I enjoyed writing this dark tale , metaphor at some level literal for some. And the title seemed quite apt as well, dont you think?

Missing - Episode 18

Tete-A-Ten

Ballard Estate -
Mumbai.

Sometimes I wish I was that child running in the garden with freedom, without any worries, because  I know now, bruised elbows are easier to heal than broken hearts.

Dr.Sneha remembered the scribbled lines on canteen table. The wood and wrought iron bench in the far corner, the hot cup of masala tea, lasting cinnamon fragrance in the air and those long conversations about life and death. The stolen glances, the fleck of ketchup on his pristine white shirt, Dr.Sneha replayed the most vivid moments in her mind.

"Doctor Phadnis - are you alright?" Tara asked craning her neck.

"Uh-Yes - yes, everything is fine, please continue" Sneha replied.

"I was just saying that Dr.Ahuja has been a great support to our family, he is a compassionate man and understands Roohi's complications so well. We are truly grateful." Tara said waving Roohi's hair.

"How did you find him?" Sneha asked.

"Come to think of it, he was like a divine intervention, a stroke of luck, out of the violet, that's how co incidental it was. Roohi was unwell yet again, had to rush back to Mumbai leaving a conference midway, Missed  a connecting flight, argued with staff, got a horrible co passenger, moved to someone else's seat and, and then I  met Aryan" said Tara while Sneha checked Roohi for any bruises .

"Roohi is fine, she's not hurt, in any way " Sneha emphasized looking at Shekhar.

"Oh thank goodness. Thank you , thank you so much, this is the best piece of news I've heard in what seems like a really long time. And I'm sorry, I was just too worked up" Shekhar said looking at Cyrus.

"Come here Cyrus, its OK, everything will be just fine, let me have a look" Sneha said while walking across towards Cyrus. He took a few steps back spontaneously, but stopped after a few paces as he saw Dr.Sneha walking towards him.

Shekhar walked towards Tara and Roohi while Sub Inspector Bhambore scratched his right eyebrow.

"Erm so ,now where are we with the case madam ? Do I  -" Bhambore asked looking at Dr.Sneha Phadnis.

"Inspector, Cyrus is studying in a law school, he is going to be a lawyer soon. He hails from a  good family, and I know his parents quite well. However, life has not been kind to him.

In fact he is the one who should be complaining. He is the one who should speak. Haven't I told you Cyrus not to be the victim, be the victor, haven't I taught you to get up and fight  - where is that brave soldier, that brilliant lawyer gone ? Get up Cyrus, get up."  Sneha spoke as the only other noise came from passing  vehicles honking unnecessarily.

"He is harmless, he has been hurt, yet he would never hurt anyone else" Sneha concluded after a pause.

"So madam should I..?" SI Bhambore did not complete his question as looked at Tara.

"No inspector saheb  its not required, we are not pressing any charges" Shekhar said while looking at Cyrus.

"Uh-oh yes, I mean what was all the chaos about,eh?  You had raised hell on the kidnap issue just a few hours back" Bhambore attempted to raise the issue one more time.

Roohi managed to free herself from her fathers embrace and ran towards Cyrus.
Sub Inspector Bhambore realized the futility of his question shaking his head.

Tara extended her arms and said "Come on sweety, it’s a long way home, lets get going".

"I don't want to leave Cyrus alone, he's lost, we need to take him home too" Roohi cried out loud.

Fanus wiped the solitary tear rolling down his cheeks and looked at Cyrus with a hint of a smile.Shekhar pulled Roohi out of Cyrus's embrace and started to walk towards his car parked a few meters away.

"Take care" said Tara while walking out of the warehouse. Cyrus and Fanus hugged each other as tears trickled down their eyes.

"OK,I think I will go as well, will have to make some report out of all this" said Bhambore following Tara's footsteps.

"Fanus - I think he needs rest, he needs to relax. Can you take Cyrus to the hotel? Also, please follow up on the return tickets. I need to excuse myself for a little while" said Dr.Phadnis.

"But where are you going, aren't we going back together?" Fanus asked raising his eyebrows.

"Don't worry ,I won't be long, its just that I need some time of my own - will be in touch on mobile" she said and walked out.

"Fanus, I'm not going back" Cyrus said looking down.

The two looked at each other without speaking any further. The  silent look was witness to a melee of emotions. The years of being together, the bullies and the bruises, the pleasure and pain , the chiding and the hiding , the losing and the finding, all summed up at that moment in time.

"We can face it together Cyrus, you are not alone, we will build a new life, our life, on our terms and conditions"

"My life is over in Delhi Fanus,I will make my life , a new life , on my terms in Mumbai" .

"Uff that’s all you know - I ,I,I, and more I - whatever happened to we Cyrus? Where are we in this new life? Where did you think about me ? Or does it not matter to you anymore?"

"Fanus its I,I,I and only I who was raped not you, it was I who lies here bruised and battered, not you, it  is I who is shattered Fanus. You were not pinned down by two hands in the back of a building. Your body was not humiliated, penetrated, ruptured and left to bleed. Your soul was not  hurt. You did not walk half naked to the nearest hospital. Your eyes did not see those snigger's, your ears did not hear those whispers, your hands did not shake uncontrollably. Yes Fanus, you guessed it right. It was me."

"It was not my fault that I didn't know" Fanus knelt down.

"I'm not leaving, Fanus-  its decided."

"I am leaving Cyrus - I'm going back to Delhi - I am going to complete my studies and face the world. Not hide here , I am not a coward, I am going to go out there and face the world - I don't believe in breaking, I believe in making. Besides,I am not leaving college,I am going to back and stick it out. What are you going to do about your law school? Abandon it ?" Fanus asked raising his voice.

"Law is not for me, I will make movies" he said.

"Make movies? You are out of your mind, you have no background, no godfather, no connections -who is going to let you make movies ?"

"That's not the point Fanus, let's see who stop me from making movies".

Magic

Call it magic, or call it you.
Call it tragic, or call it you.
Call it love,or call it you.
Call it hate,or call it you.

Call it life,with you.
Call it strife, without you.
Call it anger,losing you.
Call it pain,forgetting you.

Call it hunger,of loving you.
Call it tears,of missing you.
Call it heart,of my body.
Call it soul,of my universe.

Call it rain,or clouds hiding you,
Call it sunshine,or warmth in you.
Call it sky,or earth watching you.
Call it anything,nothing misses you.

Just call it magic,
or just me and you.

Gyanban Thoughts - inexplicable and yet self explanatory - that's what magic is all about it just happens, isn't it?

That old story

That old  photograph
In the album of memories
Woke up old chapters and stories.

That unread letter
lost in-between pages,
touched many bookmarks.

That old perfume
Wrapped around her nape
Danced into dormant senses

That old bridge
She ran across last
Of untouched tears.

That old feeling
Of an aching heart
Choked with helplessness
That old window
Of an uninterrupted fall
Dying life and rising love.

Gyanban Thoughts : at times in life you stand and look back, that unbroken heart, that untold story, that frozen moment in time, just feels like it never went away. And yet you have moved so far away...

Ten Bucks

‘What’s your name again?' he said raising his right eyebrow.
‘This is the first time you asked’ she said with lowering her eyes.
‘Rohini Dev Burman’she said after a brief pause.
‘R D Burman eh?’he said puffing smoke rings.
‘Yes Rohini Dev Burman’.
‘Do you have the talent like him, can you sing like him?’ he said narrowing his eyes.
‘I am a woman’
‘So you re like Asha?’
No sir, I am Rohini’ she said looking up.
Attitude huh?’
'Confidence sir’ she said lowering her head again.
‘You can wait outside’ he said gesturing towards the door.

‘Its been 6 months, she comes in every single day to meet me -she'd do anything to get a chance to sing - I bet ten bucks she will be better than Asha’ he said while stubbing his fifth cigarette.
‘Rajinder, don’t be silly, you’re just infatuated with her looks, not her voice’ said producer Ramnathan.
‘Anna, ten bucks, the most precious ten bucks in the history of this music industry – why don’t you take the bet?’ Rajinder said.
‘Raji, relax, how can you forget your history of losing bets?’
‘Ten bucks, and I will make this ordinary nobody, in to the next superstar of playback singing’ he said.

‘I am not taking any bets, its an open and shut case, she will sing a few songs here and there, and then she’ll be forgotten just like hundreds before. We will probably see her at some award functions or some jokers marriage ceremony standing in a corner desperately trying to get some attention with her failing body and ageless voice’ Ramanathan opined and stood up to leave.

‘Wait – ten bucks, the last time I dare you – don’t chicken out -my heart will weep’ Rajinder said.
Rajinder knew exactly how to entice  Producer Ramanathan into a deal, this was not the first time. But this time he needed this to work more than ever.
‘Is she doing you ? Are you sleeping with her ? Is she pregnant or something?’ Ramanathan said.
There was silence and the two exchanged glances for the first time.
OK done – but we'll do it my way -ten bucks it is. Here  is my ten bucks right on the soft-board.It stays there only till one month – I will collect this back on 30th April and you will lose your house, your job, your life and of course the ten bucks – deal?’
‘It’s a deal’ Rajinder said.
Producer Ramanathan smirked ‘Let the games begin.’
‘Rohini come in’ Rajinder gestured standing at the door.
‘You are going to be the next superstar of playback singing - I got you your deal - a chance to sing in Ramanathan's next movie' he said looking deeply into her eyes.
‘I know’ she said.
‘What is it that you, want?’ Rajinder asked.
‘I couldve said you heart, but its Money that I really want. Regular money and if you miss a payment, the photographs go to the press.’
The mood in the room had changed.
‘Ah so you are going to blackmail me?’he said.
‘Yes if I need to’ she said.
‘Let’s just say I don’t agree to your terms and conditions’ he said.
‘Why are you bent on getting screwed, no pun intended Rajinder’ she said.
‘Ah darling its not me, its you who is going to get screwed – I have those negatives with me.’Rajinder said with a hint of a crooked smile.
‘That’s impossible – you can never get to them – show it to me if you really have them?’she said.
‘You can go to the press with your negatives, that is if you can find them again’ he said winking.
You are lying you can never have those negatives, ever’
‘And why so my dear?’
‘Because they are…’

‘Yes…they are..What? Let me tell you my dear – those negatives were picked up from your now ransacked home, and right now they’re on their way here’Rajinder said looking at his watch.
‘What?’ Rohini exclaimed wide eyed.
Rajinder smiled.
‘Now you will do exactly what I say – take off your clothes.’
Rohini stood still for a while and then obeyed instructions. Rajinder didn’t take too long to get into the act and soon he was panting for breath. He expected her to resist a bit, but she did not. Instead,it seemed like she was enjoying. The momentum increased, he rode her well, she moaned and asked for more
'Faster,faster,you bastard,do it to me,now faster...'Rohini screamed.
The heartbeats knew no bounds and at a point they choked.Rajinder died of a cardiac arrest in the middle of their torrid love making session.

Rohini sat up on the bed breathing heavy and said ‘Rama sir – you can come in now, the job is done – where’s my ten bucks?’

Gyanban Thoughts - a quirky love story after a long time. The double cross was the key point, and the setting deliberate.

Everyday Love

That wet towel on the bed,
Dirty clothes and newspapers spread,
Your snoring rapture and my sleeplessness,
Of daily lives and daily mess.

Those frowning glances and channel switches,
Forgotten dates and mad cricket matches,
Your pointless limitless meetings
Of morning peeves and frittered evenings.

The irksome fights and the color of curtains,
Mismatched pillows and forgettable bargains,
Your flexibility and my perfection,
Of designed laziness and my instant action.

The sudden colleague and random invite,
 Junk food and my plight,
Your innocent look and my intrigue,
 Of wasted weekends and fatigue.

 Treasured love and priceless moments,
Your constant chatter, and my silent nod.
Today they are my only conversations,
With a hanging photo on the wall.

Gyanban Thoughts - what we call irritation or frustration at one point in time, sometimes turnout to be the most memorable moments in our lives. This poem is written from a point of view of a woman remenicsing about her husband after his demise. This is set in an urban landscape by design, trying to capture the everyday lives and everyday issues of modern times.

Bearer

They came in a hurry
With their minds blurry
They raged and cried
Some tears dried.

They came happy sad or frayed,
Romantic or hearbroken everyday,
Thoughts screaming out loud,
Some down but not out.

I travelled with their lives
Everyday noons or nights,
They told me their stories,
Some ambitions,wishesh or glories.

I smiled and help them move on
Crossed the crossings forlorn,
Cushioned them on the bends
Some twists and some turns.

Today I stand alone as a former,
Quietly ensconced in a dark corner
Waiting for the grinder
A gruelling end,and a gentle reminder
Life is just like a passenger…

Gyanban Thoughts – this poem is written from the point of view of a Taxi. The title Bearer is aptly fit the sentiment of the poem.So many stories unfold in his daily life, so many travellers join him in the brief journey, yet no one ever told his story. No one ever cared what happened to him? Where was the time or need ? They were there everytime we needed them,we travelled and reached our destinations time and gain. But did you stop and care of what happened to them ? Or did you rationalise it out of your lives ? Quite similar to our lives isnt't it? How we forget those people who took us to our destinations...

Life is just like a passenger, always  looking forward to the next destination but seldom realising how important the journey was...

Personnalités

A conventional Punjabi beauty, long waist length hair, big eyes, tender lips and a smile which set a few hearts aflutter even now.Today would have been just like any other Friday had it not been for one appointment on the diary. The name Wing Commander Ajaybir Thakore made her distinctly uncomfortable. It was a name she was familiar with 7 years ago.

Dr.Rishima Singh had her task cut out. She was nervous, tensed and anxious – exactly the traits she had mastered to overcome during her extensive trainings. She was a practicing psychologist and the best in class. At 35,she had earned herself a financial freedom, a peer respect and a fan following.

She checked her outlook calendar again – her 2PM status showed as busy.

The churning in her stomach was fighting a battle to show up on her face. But she fought hard. She had always been a fighter. She sat back in the deck chair of her very modern, yet minimalist-design office. Very chic and comfortable and saw the clock tick-tock.

The dangling clock chimed 1.30PM. She chided herself to remain calm and relaxed. She sat back on her recliner.

‘Good afternoon Dr.Singh – This is Wing Commander Ajaybir Thakore, may I come in’ echoed a calm baritone behind the half open door. At 6 feet 2 inches Ajaybir or “AVIATHAKOR” as he was affectionately called, waited patiently outside the door. Typical Rajput looks, sharp nose, deep eyes, short crew cut hair and a pointed, well-trimmed moustache. Dressed in formal black trousers, impeccable white shirt and the tinge of green from the perfect shave completed the package.

Her heart was pounding, pulse racing, lips quivering as she got up to open the door. For a moment time stood still. The atmosphere was electric.

A smile found it ‘s way to her lips as she gingerly opened the door. The familiar Polo Green perfume by Ralph Lauren forced its way into the room ahead of its master. Gently caressing down her nape, then engulfing her around the shoulders.

‘Hello – please come in’ she said softly. A softness that lay buried under the rocks of heartbreaks, tears and many years. They sat in silence, the only noise came from the cup and saucer parting their lips and resting on the table.

The trapped chemistry was yearning to break-free. In fact as their eyes met, it seemed to come back with a vengeance. She felt warm and flushed inside. She even let out a nervous chuckle realizing how silly she was behaving.

Wing Commander Ajaybir finally broke the ice.

‘How have you been?’

There was no response from her.

‘I was visiting Gurgaon…’ he paused. She looked up.

‘For the last time – am going to relocate to Canada’ he continued.

Her eyelashes strained to ask a question.

‘Yes I’m leaving the air force’.

‘Am here till Sunday night – my flight is at 0200 hrs. Monday morning.’

She lowered her eyes again.

‘Won’t you talk to me Ri?’ There was a distinct softness in the baritone.

She nodded mischiveously with a suppressed smile.

‘Don’t tease me’ he said.

He got up from the chair and kneeled beside her. Rishima was taken aback, but she managed not to show it. She was breathing heavily now.

His face came closer to hers. She could feel his breath on her cheeks. His fingers gently removed the tresses off her forehead, then circled behind her ears and stopped just before the edge of her lips.

His index finger glided back to her ears, this time taking a different route, came down her nape on to her shoulder and rested it on her arms. Every single shackle of tradition, work ethic, emotion was breaking down in her.

The long leather couch became the perfect conduit. The forces of restraint broke down finally. Passionate, intense and deep. The deep kiss would only break to gasp for breath; the moan would only escape to embrace the erupting passion. They made love.

Serenity often presents itself in the most odd places; in this case it was the leather couch! Calmness returned after the storm.

‘Come with me’ he whispered in her ears.

‘We’ll make our dream come true – in a far away land – away from the madness of people, society, rules and customs. Just you and me.’ He stopped.

He lifted her face from his bare chest and looked into her eyes. She looked up and said nothing, but her eyes conveyed a thousand emotions.

Ri – I am serious– come with me’.He pleaded.

‘If I don’t get your answer by Sunday night – I’ll know.’

She never got back to him on that Sunday, seven years ago.

Just then the intercom speakerphone announced chirpily –“Dr.Singh – your 2 o’clock appointment is here. There was a distant ring in herhead. She opened her eyes to see the intercom indicator blinking.

She got up from the recliner chair. It was fuzzy at first and then it became clear.

‘Thank you Nandini – ask him to wait outside - I will be there in a minute -and take the day off Nandini'.

‘Really? Thank you and have a great weekend’ Nandini gleefuly hung up the phone.

Ri arched back into the chair, with raised arms over her head - she played with her silken hair, just like she did before every conquest.

She lit a cigarette and thought about it once more.

‘Hmm – Damn,I should have told him earlier.I think I lost a chance to secure some repeat business' - Ri inhaled the smoke deep into her lungs.

'I should have told him about his brother’s child in my womb ,7 years back !' she sighed letting out a smoke ring.

'Imagine all the money I would have made dealing with that mental wreck.'

'A solemn duty for a professional psychologist.-- isn't it .......Ms.gullible Ri-shi-ma darling?’ Ri taunted.

Rishima chose not to respond as usual.

'Maybe it's time I ensure it' Ri went and opened the door.

Gyanban Thoughts - This fiction short story is about characters with alter ego. In this case Ri was Rishima's aggressive alternate personality. This is also known as DID.This story had multiple possible endings - tragic, ironic, jubilation, sacrifice - but after trying out 5 different endings I felt the dark personality disorder ending the most suited. I'd be glad to know if any of the readers would've liked a different ending - feel free to submit your version in the comment box - would love to see some new ideas.
